Newfoundlands are known for their loving, devoted personality. Newfie puppies are unbelievably cute and cuddly, very hard to resist but they are NOT the dog for everybody. Please read ALL of the information below
and if you are sure you want a Newfie puppy, Once you have studied all of this information and you are sure you really want a Newfie from our kennel, fill out OUR APPLICATION , we will confirm receipt within 24 hours.
Hair and Drool
Newfoundland dogs DO drool, they DO shed and require a lot of daily maintenance and training.
Anyone who tells you that their Newfies are bred to not drool are either not being entirely honest or they are not breeding Newfies that will look like Newfies when they are full grown. Please read this article and if you can laugh when you are done you might, and I mean
might want to continue on. Why Newfies drool. How do we deal with the drool and hair in our home? Here are some tips:
- Walls are washed weekly
- We have dog rooms and "that is not your room" rooms. At least this keeps it in specific areas.
- We groom daily. Wash at least every 10 days and every week in the suumer. This reduces the hair.
- Dogs are outside most of the day as long as the weather is good.
- Dogs sleep and are groomed in a basement room that has a cement floor and drain.
- Our dogs will drool more if they are hot. We keep our air conditioner at 65deg in the summer and the heat equally as low in the winter.
Health Issues
Heart, hip and elbow problems are a problem in the breed. Make sure you double check every breeder's claim of "Clear Heart, Hips and Elbows" by checking the OFA database.
Only testing and radiographic evaluations can insure a healthy Newfie. The fact that the parents of a puppy "appear" to be healthy does not
mean they won't have problems as they get older or that their offspring won't have health issues.
TRAINING
Newfoundlands are BIG, sometimes VERY BIG dogs. The bigger the dog the more important training is. A puppy who jumps on people and "play bites" will grow
up to be a 150# dogs who knocks people down and tears the sleeves off of shirts, LITERALLY! Not everyone likes dogs and
a small child being knocked down by an excited puppy can end in lawsuits so TRAIN YOUR PUPPY. He or She will be happier and so will you.
Check with your local AKC chapter for obedience class schedules and also PETCO and PET SMART will usually have
training available. You can also search on the internet for puppy training classes, there may be a facility in your area that
specializes in dog training. We are assuming you want a Newfie puppy to be a family member and companion, what better way
to spend time with your Newfie.
